In Aged Care

The benefits of various forms of ‘Laughter Therapy’ for older people in residential care are well documented. Laughter Yoga can be introduced to residents as part of any group session such as friendship groups or exercise groups to create fun and laughter and add value to the group. Staff can also benefit from 10 to 15 minute Laughter Yoga sessions to reduce stress, enhance teamwork and productivity and improve wellbeing and morale.

In the Health Sector

Laughter Yoga is highly recommended as an adjunct to the management of chronic diseases. The health benefits of laughter which are well researched, are relevant to anyone who wishes to strengthen their immune system, reduce the effects of stress and improve their health and wellbeing. Laughter Therapy is recommended as a legitimate complimentary therapy in the USA and promoted by all the major health organisations. Health professionals are challenged to maintain their own health and wellbeing while providing services in the health sector. Laughter Yoga will also provide benefits to staff who are dealing with the responsibilities of their position, as well as the vicarious stress of their patients and clients. Laughter is one of the most cost effective remedies for stress reduction, boosting the immune system and contributing to health and wellbeing.

For Mental Health

Laughter Yoga has been recommended for people experiencing depression and other mental health disorders because of the mood lifting effect of laughter due to the release of endorphins. Laughter Yoga is an aerobic exercise and exercise is one of the first strategies for dealing with depression. In addition, attending a Laughter Club reduces isolation and welcomes people into a community which supports and includes them. People can rediscover their playfulness and laughter in a safe environment.

For People with Disabilities

Experience with a laughter club for people with disabilities has demonstrated many benefits for them. They have participated and interacted more with time, learning the various aspects of laughter yoga with increasing enjoyment and anticipation. Individuals’ social and physical skills have improved as well as their participation. Laughter Yoga has become a significant part of their recreation programme and has great potential to improve their quality of life. Carers can learn the skills of Laughter Yoga to incorporate into their groups.

In Work places

People who share regular sessions of Laughter Yoga in the work place reduce their stress, improve communication and teamwork, as well as their productivity. Research at Deakin University in Victoria has demonstrated an improved sense of wellbeing and morale, which can reduce absenteeism and staff turnover. You can invite a Laughter Yoga practitioner to introduce your organisation to the benefits of Laughter Yoga.

In Education

Students of all ages from Kindergarten to University, as well as their teachers and lecturers can benefit from the introduction of Laughter Yoga into classrooms. Learning is facilitated by a positive environment where students are alert, stress levels reduced and motivation is increased. Laughter Yoga is a shared activity in which all participants are equal and everyone laughs in the same language regardless of any differences in race, gender, religious or political beliefs or ability. Laughter Yoga can enhance wellbeing in the classroom.
